History of Miami County, KS

Miami County was one of the 33 original counties created in 1855 by the Territorial Legislature and wasn’t organized until April 2, 1857.

The original settlers of the area were Native American tribes, the biggest of which was the Miami tribe. European settlers later came in as missionaries to the tribes. Throughout the years, more settlers arrived and built homes in the area. The county was first established as the Lykins County named after Baptist Missionary, Dr. David Lykins.

In 1861, the county’s name was changed to Miami after Kansas became the Union’s 34th state. The county’s name change was made in honor of the most
prominent Native American tribe living in the area.

Miami County real estate consists mostly of homes on acreage and single-family homes. Most homes on acreage are 100-plus acre estates but there are smaller 5- acre lot properties as well. Homes in these ranch properties usually come in one to two stories and are done in contemporary, traditional, bungalow, and ranch architectural styles.

In this trail, you can walk through the tallgrass prairie ecosystem and spot wild turkeys and bobcats.
• Enjoy all types of watersports like wakeboarding, wakesurfing, and waterskiing at KC Watersports. For fishing enthusiasts, head over to the Hillside State Park where walleye, bluegill, catfish, largemouth bass, and crappie are in abundance.
• Go to the Cedar Feline Conservatory and Education Center to see different types of large exotic cats and learn more about these fascinating animals.
• The county has four wineries that make up the Somerset Wine Trail. The Somerset Ridge, NightHawk Winery, White Wind Farms, and Middle Creek Winery not only offer fantastic wines but a number of special events all year round as well.
• There are also plenty of family-friendly activities in Miami County. You can stargaze at the Powell Observatory. Go see a movie at the Midway Drive-in Movie Theatre. Or visit the Powell Pumpkin Patch to pick pumpkins, hike the nature trail, and go on hayrides.
