Jackson County is a thriving county in western Missouri. It borders Cass County, Ray County, and Johnson County. It is the second most populated county in the state with over 600,000 people living in the area.

History of Jackson County, MO

French explorers were the first documented settlers of Jackson County. The Missouri River became a highway for exploration where the settlers and the Native Americans in the area engaged in trade.

The county was organized on December 15, 1826, and was named after the United States seventh president, Andrew Jackson.

Another US president began his civil service work in Jackson County as its presiding judge in 1926. Under Harry S. Trumans term, he implemented a county-wide Ten Year Plan which led to improvements in the Independence Courthouse, as well as the construction of a juvenile center, public roads, and bridges. He also had a hand in making Kansas City one of the nations top cities with art deco buildings.

• Learn about the county’s greatest hero and the county itself from the Harry Truman Farm Home and the Harry S. Truman National Historic Site. Meanwhile, art lovers should visit the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art.
