Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens

The Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens is a 300-acre ecological sanctuary with almost five miles of paved and wood chip trails winding through the arboretum and gardens. It is dedicated to preserving and restoring the eight natural ecosystems which include Dry Oak Savanna, Old Field, and Riparian Woodland.
The award-winning Monet Garden and Train Garden are crowd favorites among the 13 gardens that make up the whole park. Enjoy a number of mesmerizing art sculptures in the park, including works from the Chinese Cultural exchange collection and various temporary exhibits. There are also trails that go along Wolf Creek and through the restored prairie.
Admission is $3 for adults, $1 for children ages 6 to 12, and free for kids 5 years and younger. On Tuesdays, there is no admission fee.
Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead
13800 Switzer Road
Know all about the farmstead life firsthand at the Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead. The farmstead offers a number of interactive tours and programs that are perfect for teaching families and kids about farm life.
Kids can bottle-feed baby goats, milk cows, ride horse-drawn wagons, pan for treasure, and so much more. Visitors can also encounter over 200 animals here, including birds of prey. The vegetable and flower gardens and an old-timey fishing pond are welcome visual treats, as well.
The farmstead is open April 1 to October 31 every day from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. They have extended hours starting on Memorial Day up to Labor Day on
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
The admission fee is $3 per person while admission is free on Mondays to Thursdays from 2:00 PM to closing time.
Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art
12345 College Boulevard
This is an internationally acclaimed museum that presents 16 exhibits featuring pieces from regional, national, and international artists. The featured artists here are a combination of the established and the up-and-coming. It is the region’s most remarkable cultural destination.
The museum’s exterior, covered in Kansas limestone, has an understated but powerful architectural design that has received national and international praise.
The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art has no admission fees and is open Tuesdays to Sundays.
Museum at Prairiefire: American Museum of Natural History
5801 West 135th Street
The Museum at Prariefire: American Museum of Natural History features interactive programs, as well as permanent and traveling exhibits.
The museum has a range of interactive activities for kids like the Discovery Room, a hands-on space for children aged 3 to 12-years-old. The room has six sections that focus on paleontology, anthropology, zoology, biology, geology, and astronomy. Their Virtual Theater offers a unique and state-of-the-art virtual reality experience.
Another impressive feature of the museum is its striking exterior. The building has become one of the most photographed places in the whole city. The design by architect Jonathan Kharfen of Verner Johnson, Inc. resembles flames and was inspired by the prairie-fire burns, an important aspect of Kansas farm life.
The museum is open Mondays to Saturdays at 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Sundays from noon to 5:00 PM. The admission to the Great Hall is free while other exhibits require tickets.
