Penn Valley Park in Kansas City

In Kansas City, you don’t need to break the bank to have a good time. With so many fun budget-friendly activities in the area, you can enjoy a whole weekend in the city without spending too much— or at all!

Here’s a list of fun things to do in Kansas City when you’re on a budget:

Visit the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
4525 Oak Street, Kansas City

Cost: Admission is free

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art welcomes its guests with a stunning entryway that leads to dozens of rotating galleries, exhibitions and, outdoors, the famous Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park. Prominently displayed on its glorious grounds of green grass are the 4 iconic Oldenburg Shuttlecock sculptures and phenomenal works by sculptors such as Henry Moore, Roxy Paine, and Alexander Calder. There’s even a really cool glass labyrinth by Robert Morris to explore!

Inside, you’ll see artwork from different regions of the world. There’s a historic African art collection that spans 2,500 years. View the Native American exhibit with over 200 artifacts featuring pottery, basketry, textiles, quill and beadwork, paintings, and sculptures. Don’t miss the Gates of Paradise, which are casts of the original doors of 15th-century sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti. They’re a sister set to the incredible doors that now grace the Baptistery of the Duomo (Cathedral) in Florence, Italy.

The museum’s contemporary art collection is also noteworthy. Showcased are diverse media and styles – there’s pop, minimalism, and conceptual art. Visitors can join free guided tours to learn more about the history and culture of the art on display.
