1. Immerse yourself in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art’s extensive collection

   The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Midtown-Westport houses more than 35,000 works – this is more than enough art to go through in a few hours. Since admission is free (and donations are welcome), you don’t have to agonize over choosing to see paintings from the Old Masters or artifacts from Ancient Egypt. And if plein air is more your thing, the sculpture garden is worth a visit.

2. Delve into jazz at the American Jazz Museum
   1616 East 18th Street

   The American Jazz Museum in downtown Kansas City makes jazz history tangible with the help of technology. Headphones, touch screens, and mixing boards allow visitors to interact directly with the defining moments of jazz. The Blue Room, a jazz club within the museum, also lets you experience the city’s current live jazz band scene. Check this venue out every 9 AM to 6 PM from Tuesday to Saturday and from 12 noon to 6 PM on Sunday.

3. Sample local brews at Boulevard Brewing Company
   2534 Madison Avenue

   Are you a craft beer connoisseur? Enjoy a flight of beer in Boulevard’s cavernous beer hall. Choose from a broad selection (30 taps!) and maybe even take some home in a growler which, despite the resemblance, is not a can.

   If you like context to complement your beer, arrive at the brewery early and snag tickets for a tour of the brewery at $5 apiece.

4. Order a plate of BBQ at Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que
   3002 W. 47th Avenue

   Kansas City natives take their barbecue seriously. You’ll have one of the best and most authentic barbecues in town at a gas station—specifically at Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que. Order the ribs and burnt ends, which come highly recommended by the late Anthony Bourdain himself.

5. Enjoy Loose Park’s green oasis
   5200 Wornall Road

   Take a break from the crowds of the shopping district at this 75-acre green space in the middle of the city. Named after local businessman Jacob Loose, this park was once the site of the historic Battle of Westport during the time of the Civil War. Now, its violent past has been replaced with peaceful surroundings, complete with a walking trail, a rose garden, picnic tables, tennis courts, and enough space for people to spread out and relax.

   This wonderful public space is open every day starting at 5 AM so you can enjoy the sunrise here and stay the whole day for some outdoor fun up to midnight.
